Dr. Lauren Costine on Affirmative Therapy: Healing for LGBTQ Individuals

I really want to help someone. I have to tell you, this is really one of the most empowering parts of affirmative therapy that I practice is really getting people to study what our ancestors have done before us and how part of civilization they have been, and realizing that we've always existed and we will always exist.
Imagine growing up in a world that constantly tells you who you are is wrong. In this episode of 'Recovery Unscripted', Dr. Lauren Costine dives into how affirmative therapy can help LGBTQ individuals challenge and change those harmful internalized messages. Dr. Costine, a psychologist, author, and activist, brings her expertise to the table, sharing how this form of therapy acknowledges and celebrates a person's identity and experiences, creating a safe space for true healing. Dr.
Costine explains how negative beliefs about oneself, often absorbed from a heteronormative society, can be particularly damaging for LGBTQ individuals. These internalized messages can hinder recovery and overall mental health. Through her personal experiences with addiction and recovery, she illustrates how affirmative therapy can be a powerful tool in overcoming these barriers. One of the key points Dr. Costine emphasizes is the importance of coming out in the recovery process.
She highlights the challenges LGBTQ individuals face in treatment centers that may not consider sexual orientation, making it difficult for them to fully embrace their identity. Affirmative therapy, she notes, empowers individuals to explore their identity and take pride in who they are. The conversation also touches on the intersection of addiction and mental health. Dr. Costine discusses how addiction can often serve as a coping mechanism for dealing with intense emotions and heartache.
She delves into societal influences on personal growth, including the controversy surrounding the female brain and its impact on treatment approaches. Dr. Costine also shares her thoughts on the connection between politics and personal growth, reflecting on her observations of misogyny in political spheres. She encourages listeners to understand how societal pressures affect their mental health and to strive for personal growth despite these challenges.
This episode offers a compassionate and insightful look at how affirmative therapy can make a significant difference in the lives of LGBTQ individuals in recovery. Tune in to hear Dr. Costine's valuable perspectives on identity, empowerment, and healing.
