Maureen's Triumph: Overcoming a Lifetime of Trauma and Addiction

I learned that I wanted to live because I didn't know that until she took cancer and I thought I was just hanging around waiting for it to be time to die. And I also found out that my sobriety was more important to me than anything else, because I did not want that morphine drip that I was supposed to be in charge of.
Maureen's story is nothing short of extraordinary. At 71, she shares a life marked by profound challenges and ultimate redemption. Raised in a military home with an alcoholic father and a bipolar mother who turned a blind eye, Maureen seemed destined for a life of turmoil. Her struggles began early; she was running away at age three and drinking leftover liquor by age four.
The trauma didn't stop there—she endured sexual abuse from her father while her mother remained passive, leading Maureen down a dark path that included prostitution and a near-fatal gunpoint assault. Her mother's suicide only deepened her despair, pushing her toward suicidal thoughts herself. But Maureen's story doesn't end in tragedy. She found her way to Alcoholics Anonymous, where she discovered the support and community she desperately needed.
Through AA, Maureen not only achieved sobriety but also found beauty in life again. She survived cancer and a severe car accident, and today, she channels her experiences into art and writing, with a manuscript ready for publication. In this episode, Maureen takes listeners on a journey from the depths of addiction to the heights of recovery. She talks candidly about the importance of support systems, self-reflection, and personal growth.
Her resilience in the face of overwhelming odds serves as a beacon of hope for anyone struggling with addiction or trauma. Tune in to hear Maureen's incredible journey and find inspiration in her message of healing and gratitude.
