I like to say that's when I surrendered to AA. And I happened to get involved with a bunch of men who used to pull my coattail all the time in order to keep me straight.
Imagine finding the love of your life in a place where you’re both at your lowest. That’s exactly what happened to Dominic and Valerie, who met during their recovery journey and have now been sober together for twenty years. Their story is a rollercoaster of highs and lows, deeply rooted in their individual battles with addiction and their shared commitment to sobriety. Dominic's relationship with alcohol began early, influenced by family gatherings where drinking was the norm.
He chased a lifestyle filled with fast money and excitement, even working as a bookie in his teens. His time in the military couldn't curb his addiction, leading him further down a destructive path. Valerie, on the other hand, believed her heavy drinking was just part of normal life. It wasn’t until she hit rock bottom, crawling to the bathroom in front of her young nieces and nephews, that she realized how much alcohol controlled her life.
She had already been sober for three months when she met Dominic at an AA meeting. Together, they found strength in each other and the support of their 12-step community. Valerie likens her experience to being a sponge soaked in alcohol, with AA wringing her out and allowing her to fill her life with better things.
For Dominic, surrendering to AA was a pivotal moment, providing him with a group of men who kept him accountable and on the path to sobriety.
