Setting Boundaries: Key to Effective Addiction Treatment
The families that are contacting me all the time unless I say: please keep me in touch with what's going on, that's a different story. Then that's included somehow into the treatment and I see that, as we've made an agreement and they're part of the net, basically they're telling me what's going on and I'm giving them suggestions about how they could approach it on their end, which is different than they're telling me. That's inappropriate and I feel like that's sometimes where the anxiety leads.
Ever wondered how setting boundaries can make a difference in addiction treatment? In this episode of 'Coming Up for Air', hosts Dominique Simone-Lavigne, Laurie McDougall, and Kayla Solomon continue their insightful discussion on the role of families in the recovery process. They dive deep into the importance of self-care and the necessity of establishing boundaries, not just for those in treatment but for their families too.
Laurie McDougall shares, 'What you were talking about before, Laurie, is that the helplessness is because we basically walk around feeling like we don't have any control, we don't have any choices'. This episode emphasizes how creating boundaries can help individuals and their families regain a sense of control and choice, which is crucial for effective support. The hosts also highlight the significance of empowering those in treatment to make their own decisions and take ownership of their recovery journey.
By addressing past traumas and becoming more aware of buried emotions, individuals can work through their issues and build a more supportive network. This episode is a must-listen for anyone looking to understand the dynamics of addiction recovery and the vital role that boundaries play in it.
