From Big Books to Big Changes: Sobriety Then and Now with Nelson H.
It really hit me hard the gift that Today might be. Of course, I wrote this entire thing myself, with no editing or consultation with anybody, so I might just be completely full of shit, but for now I consider it an epiphany and I'm happy about it.
Imagine trying to get sober while juggling a job in the 1940s. Sounds tough, right? Nelson H. dives into this very topic in this episode of 'LOL Sober'. Reflecting on a recent meeting where they read “To Employers” from the Big Book, Nelson takes a nostalgic yet critical look at how far we've come in understanding and treating addiction. Written 80 years ago, the Big Book’s advice was groundbreaking for its time, but oh, how the times have changed!
Nelson, sober since 2008, shares his personal journey and the massive shifts he’s witnessed over the past 14 years. He points out that while it was once incredibly challenging to balance sobriety and employment, today’s world offers more understanding and support. With more recovery programs and mental health professionals attuned to addiction, the landscape is evolving. But it’s not all smooth sailing. Nelson also discusses how modern technology impacts sobriety, acting as both a blessing and a curse.
The ease of connecting with others in recovery is a game-changer, yet it comes with its own set of challenges. Throughout the episode, Nelson underscores the importance of having a supportive network and how employers’ attitudes towards addiction have shifted for the better. He wraps up with a powerful reminder: today is the best day ever to try to get sober.
With all the progress and resources available now, there’s never been a better time to start or continue your journey to sobriety.
