Theo Fleury: From NHL Stardom to Conquering Addiction and Trauma

Pain is the greatest motivator for change. But I had to look at those experiences from a different lens. I would figure it out and then I would take that knowledge, that experience of overcoming those obstacles, and then in turn, give it back, because whatever you get, you got to give it away, because why would you go through it if there wasn't a purpose at the end of it?
Imagine reaching the pinnacle of your career, only to have it all crumble due to hidden battles. That’s the story of Theo Fleury, a former NHL star who played for Canada and won a gold medal at the Winter Olympics. In this episode of 'The Addiction Podcast - Point of No Return', Fleury opens up about his tumultuous journey through trauma, addiction, and ultimately, recovery.
His story begins with promises of NHL glory from a coach and scout, but behind the scenes, he was grappling with the harrowing trauma of sexual abuse as a teen. This led him down a dark path of drug and alcohol addiction, which eventually forced him out of the NHL in 2003. However, Fleury's journey didn’t end there. He turned his life around and became a sought-after speaker and author, sharing his experiences to help others.
In 2009, he published his best-selling autobiography 'Playing with Fire', where he laid bare the years of abuse and addiction. In this episode, Fleury discusses how he managed his mental health struggles, including severe depression, panic, and anxiety disorders. He reveals that hockey was no longer his sanctuary; it had become a source of pain. His path to recovery began when he realized the need to work on himself, his beliefs, and his relationship with a higher power.
One powerful message from Fleury is the importance of self-love. He emphasizes that without loving oneself, it’s impossible to truly love others or maintain healthy relationships. Fleury believes that pain is a significant motivator for change and that overcoming obstacles can give one the strength to help others. This episode is not just for those battling addiction but also for their friends and family who seek understanding and hope.
Through interviews with former addicts and their loved ones, 'The Addiction Podcast - Point of No Return' sheds light on various rehab methods and offers inspiration for recovery.
