Tom Sway: Singing Through Recovery on The Creative High Podcast
I definitely feel most connected to my own story in that song because I live in my own head and that is the challenge for me and it feels good and authentic to write it down and to feel the anger that that brings forth, or the futility- and it's this weird thing where it actually feels freeing for me to commit a small suicide in my head in the song, to let everything kind of blow up in the song, and I think that can kind of give me a reset in my own life.
Ever wondered how art can be a lifeline in recovery? In this episode of 'The Creative High Podcast', host Adriana Marchione sits down with Tom Sway, a 'lyric blues' musician who has found solace and strength in his craft. Tom's music isn't just about melodies; it's a deep dive into the emotional landscapes of his life, particularly his journey through addiction and recovery.
Adriana and Tom discuss the magic of creating art and how it can make the recovery process more enriching. Tom opens up about his own struggles with sensitivity and how it made him more vulnerable to addiction. He shares candidly about using alcohol to numb the overwhelming thoughts and emotions he faced daily. Early in his recovery, he experienced noise sensitivity, feeling trapped by the world's chaos. It was only by setting personal boundaries that he found peace again.
One of the highlights of this episode is Tom performing two of his poignant songs, '51/50' and 'Rescue Mission'. These tracks aren't just tunes; they're a raw expression of his battles with depression and suicidal thoughts. Tom talks about how writing these songs allows him to confront and release his deepest emotions, offering him a fresh perspective on life. The conversation also touches on the importance of self-acceptance.
Tom recalls his journey from seeking others' approval to embracing his true self. This shift was crucial for his healing, and it's a powerful message for anyone grappling with addiction or recovery. This episode is a testament to the transformative power of art. Whether you're an artist, someone on a recovery journey, or simply curious about how creativity can aid in overcoming life's challenges, Tom's story is both inspiring and enlightening.
