Matthew Buckley on the Power of Community in Recovery

So if you've had an attempt at this and it hasn't worked, give it another shot and, as Matt said, get off the couch, get involved, show up to the events, meet some people that are having fun and doing this thing, and I think you'll experience a change in perspective that will give you an opportunity at a life beyond your wildest dreams, and that's my goal for each and every one of us out there.
How does one truly support someone on their journey to long-term recovery? In this episode, Michael Walsh chats with Matthew Buckley, the alumni coordinator at Landmark Recovery of Indianapolis. With personal experience in overcoming addiction and four years of sobriety under his belt, Buckley brings a wealth of knowledge and empathy to the table.
He began his career in recovery two years ago as a patient engagement specialist and now plays a pivotal role in helping people who have completed treatment and are navigating the early stages of their recovery journey. Buckley highlights the crucial role of alumni services and aftercare in maintaining sobriety. From organizing volunteering events to fun activities like paintball outings and zoo trips, these services offer a plethora of opportunities for individuals to build new, positive associations.
It's about staying connected and focused on a quality life beyond addiction. Buckley also touches on the necessity of discomfort in early recovery. He argues that this discomfort is a driving force that motivates individuals to engage actively in their recovery. By participating in events and meeting others who are thriving, those in early recovery can shift their perspectives and open up to new possibilities. Community, according to Buckley, is indispensable for long-term recovery.
He shares how a supportive network can uplift individuals on tough days and help them form new relationships that don't revolve around substances. This sense of belonging and connection is a cornerstone of sustained recovery. Lastly, Buckley discusses finding purpose and fulfillment in recovery. Whether it's starting a new business or picking up a new hobby, he believes that discovering passions can provide a sense of purpose that was often lost during addiction.
The opportunities for a fulfilling life in recovery are endless. This episode offers invaluable insights and practical advice for anyone supporting someone in recovery or going through it themselves. Buckley's blend of personal experience and professional expertise makes this conversation both enlightening and encouraging.
