Sumera S: Bridging Faith and Recovery

I knew there was something incredibly wrong and I knew that something bad was about to happen, but I just didn't know what it was.
What happens when the path to sobriety intersects with a journey of faith? In this special episode of 'Sober Speak', Sumera S opens up about her unique story of navigating from her Islamic upbringing to finding solace in Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). Growing up in Glasgow, Sumera attended an Islamic school where she learned to read Arabic and memorize the Quran. Yet, as she matured, she felt an inexplicable pull towards churches and cathedrals, searching for a deeper spiritual connection.
It wasn't until she joined AA that she discovered a higher power that truly resonated with her. Sumera’s story isn't just about overcoming addiction; it’s about redefining spirituality. She shares how the fourth step of AA allowed her to reflect on her relationships and resentments, helping her make amends and let go of past hurts. Her journey also sheds light on the harsh realities faced by women in some Islamic communities, including forced marriages and honor killings.
Sumera bravely recounts her own experience with a forced marriage and how she managed to escape with the help of her cousin. Alcoholism strained Sumera's relationship with her family, particularly her father. She talks candidly about the pain of estrangement and the healing process through making amends. Sumera also emphasizes the crucial role of sponsorship in AA, sharing how her sponsor guided her through the steps and supported her recovery.
This episode is a powerful testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the transformative power of finding a higher power that speaks to you. Sumera’s experiences offer valuable insights into the complexities of faith, culture, and recovery. Her story is not just inspiring; it’s a reminder that no matter where you start, there’s always a path to healing.
