Sam McDowell: From Major League Pitcher to Recovery Advocate

Once you get to that point of where you can serve your fellow man through pushing through their addictions and they being able to find that purpose inside, that had to have been more rewarding every time you saw that than any game you won in your career.
Ever wondered what happens when a sports star hits rock bottom? In this episode, Coach Blu Robinson sits down with Sam McDowell, a former Major League Baseball pitcher whose career spanned from 1961 to 1975, most notably with the Cleveland Indians. After his 'retirement', McDowell's life took a dark turn as his drinking spiraled out of control, costing him his marriage and leaving him desolate and broke. But that's not where his story ends.
McDowell checked himself into rehab, repaid his debts, and enrolled at the University of Pittsburgh, earning degrees in sports psychology and addiction. Now, he dedicates his life to helping others by working with the Baseball Assistance Team (BAT) and the Major League Players Alumni Association (MLBPAA). This episode covers McDowell's journey from despair to hope, highlighting the importance of breaking addiction stigmas and the power of serving others in recovery.
As Coach Blu reminds us, 'On Team Addict II Athlete, we don't practice anonymity, because anonymity can kill you'. Tune in for an inspiring conversation that shows how even the darkest times can lead to a brighter future.
