Supporting Pregnant Women with Addiction: Insights from Dr. Jonathan Weeks

I don't know about you, Zach, but every conversation I'm going to have from now on with families, with clients, with therapists, anyone who's providing continuing care, aftercare, recommendations, I mean this is definitely going to be a piece of what we're going to talk about, because I think you've opened my eyes today and I really thank you for coming on and helping us with this.
What happens when a pregnant woman struggles with addiction? In this episode of the Landmark Recovery Podcast, host Zachary Crouch sits down with Dr. Jonathan Weeks, Medical Director of the Norton Maternal Opiate & Substance Treatment Program (MOST). Dr. Weeks brings over 30 years of experience in private practice and academic medicine, shedding light on the challenges and solutions for pregnant women battling substance use disorders. Contrary to popular belief, drug use does not make women infertile.
In fact, 80% of women with substance use disorders who seek prenatal care or are about to deliver report that they did not plan to get pregnant. Dr. Weeks discusses the importance of contraception and the benefits of medication-assisted treatment to prevent neonatal abstinence syndrome. He also touches on the neurobiology of addiction and how it affects decision-making, as well as the negative experiences many women face when interacting with medical providers. By coaching medical students and residents, Dr.
Weeks emphasizes the importance of empathy in patient care. This episode offers valuable insights into supporting pregnant women with addiction and highlights the importance of providing hope and support to those who need it most.
