Maureen Seel: From Fear to Freedom - A Survivor's Journey
If we could prevent a lot of the things that's going on in our neighborhoods, say, okay, if we became more of a caring society and also an educated one, we'd be able to spot the red flags of kids you know that are in trouble and that might be saving a life.
Ever wondered how someone can rise above a tumultuous childhood marked by fear and instability? Maureen Seel's story is a powerful testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Growing up in Missoula, Montana, Maureen faced a challenging upbringing. Raised by a mother who battled borderline personality disorder and poly-substance abuse, Maureen's home life was anything but stable. Her mother's fundamentalist beliefs and unpredictable moods left Maureen grappling with a deep-seated sense of 'badness' and 'brokenness'.
But Maureen's journey didn't end there. Moving away for college, she met her husband and started a new chapter. Yet, the shadows of her past followed her, manifesting in fears of abandonment and feelings of inherent brokenness. Things took a turn for the worse after her mother's death, leading Maureen to disordered eating as a way to regain control. It wasn't until an inpatient treatment in 2016 that she began to see a glimmer of hope.
Now residing in New York City, Maureen's story is one of perseverance and recovery. She emphasizes the importance of self-care and positive self-talk, crucial tools for any survivor. Simple acts like making breakfast or acknowledging a job well done became her stepping stones towards healing. Maureen's experience sheds light on the critical need for child abuse prevention and education in our society. By recognizing the signs of distress in children and fostering a caring environment, we can make a difference.
