I didn't know there was something called sober curious but I was already getting those feels and having both my parents diagnosed with cancer and reading about what alcohol does to your body... it's just taken all that time and then, obviously, lent to go, 'Do you know what? I'm going to do this.' I didn't know that other people felt that way. I thought it was just me and you know knowing there's this huge support network out there now for so many people is just amazing. I've been very lucky that I have found the process easier than I thought I would have found it so I'm really grateful for that.
Picture a 41-year-old skincare therapist and mum of three from Essex, deciding to turn her life around for the better. That's Joanne's story, and she shares it candidly in this episode of 'Sober Stories from Everyday People'. Joanne didn't grow up in a household where alcohol was a big deal, and as an adult, she wasn't a heavy drinker either. Yet, she felt something was off and wanted to embrace a healthier lifestyle.
Six months into her sobriety journey, she opens up about the challenges and rewards she's encountered along the way. Joanne's relationship with alcohol took a turn during lockdown, becoming more of a habit than a social activity. She used it as a coping mechanism, a reward, and it slowly started to dominate her thoughts. The real turning point came when she decided to give up alcohol for Lent. What began as a temporary challenge evolved into a profound life change.
Joanne's story isn't filled with dramatic rock-bottom moments but rather a series of realizations that led her to seek a better quality of life. From dealing with the grief of her parents' health issues to finding herself at a funeral wake without the crutch of alcohol, Joanne's journey highlights the resilience required to stick with sobriety. She talks about how giving up alcohol improved her sleep, brought mental clarity, and helped her rediscover joy in life's simple moments.
Joanne also touches on the societal pressures and expectations that come with choosing sobriety, and how she's learned to navigate those with newfound confidence. If you're looking for an honest, relatable story about the ups and downs of quitting alcohol, Joanne's experience offers plenty of insights and inspiration. Her journey is a reminder that sometimes the most impactful changes come from the simplest decisions.
