Duke Rumely's Path: From Addiction to Sober Entertainment Pioneer

I mean another nugget of wisdom along the way, because they always say that if you share what you learn within hours, you not only have a great chance of actually retaining some information, but you might actually impact a life around you, because you never know who might need a hand up or who might be struggling in their life.
Imagine finding solace in music while battling addiction. That's Duke Rumely's story. As the Executive Director of Sober AF Entertainment, Duke has dedicated over nine years to the recovery field, wearing many hats, from interventionist to marketing director. His journey, however, started much earlier. Since May 1989, Duke has been in long-term recovery and an active member of the recovery community.
Before diving into the nonprofit world, he spent 18 years on Wall Street, which gave him a unique perspective on life and addiction. In this episode of 'Beyond the Bars', Duke shares his personal experiences with addiction and how he found his footing in recovery. He recounts his early encounters with alcohol and how it initially seemed to ease his inner turmoil.
Music played a pivotal role in his life, especially during his 20s, and it was through a sober support group called the Warfrats at Grateful Dead shows that he found his tribe. The birth of Sober AF Entertainment is a testament to Duke's commitment to creating safe, fun environments for people in recovery. He explains the quirky name choice, noting that 'sober' alone often carries a negative connotation, whereas 'parties' are seen as positive.
This movement aims to shift that narrative by offering sober events that are just as enjoyable as their alcohol-fueled counterparts. Duke also delves into his role as a 'love-first' interventionist, emphasizing the power of empathy and understanding in helping others on their recovery journeys. He believes in the DIY spirit of Sober AF Entertainment, encouraging individuals to share their talents and stories to inspire others.
This episode is not just about Duke's journey but also about the broader message of community support and the transformative power of sharing experiences. Tune in to hear how one man's passion for music and recovery is making waves in the sober entertainment scene.
