Our establishment of family and friends meetings lags significantly behind the growth of four-point recovery meetings, and I'm very eager to help support individuals who would like to get family and friends meetings started in their communities. If something you've heard during this conversation today has piqued your interest, you would like to help create validating safe spaces for individuals to work on their own self-management journey while they try to support a loved one who's struggling with an addictive behavior, please reach out to us.
Pete Rubinus, the Executive Director of SMART Recovery USA, takes center stage in this episode to share his experiences and insights from the SMART Family & Friends Program. Pete, who also facilitates these meetings, opens up about the profound benefits of joining others to share stories and develop positive responses to life's challenges. Whether you're attending in-person or online, these meetings offer practical tools to support your loved one without enabling addictive behavior.
Pete highlights the transformative power of self-compassion, drawing inspiration from the work of Dr. Kristin Neff. He emphasizes the importance of creating safe, validating spaces where individuals can work on their self-management journey while supporting someone struggling with addiction. With a background in internal control auditing and education, Pete brings a unique skill set to his role, making this episode a must-listen for anyone seeking to understand the nuances of addiction recovery and the importance of community support.
