Shandelle Friedman's Journey: Embracing Diverse Paths to Recovery

Episode Overview

  • Shandell challenges the traditional notions of recovery, advocating for self-defined recovery goals and culturally specific programs.
  • The conversation highlights the importance of embracing diverse recovery paths and advocating for community and culturally relevant recovery resources.
  • The evolving landscape of harm reduction and changing perceptions around substance use and recovery are explored, paving the way for a more inclusive, compassionate, and supportive peer recovery environment.
My pathway to recovery is complete abstinence. My pathway is 12 steps. But, you know, through the work that I have done with peer support, I've come to realize that there are more pathways to recovery. And so part of my current pathway is accepting and supporting other people in their pathways too, which is pretty cool.
What if there isn't just one way to recover from addiction? In this episode of 'Recovery Talk', Tim Saubers sits down with Shandelle Friedman, a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist, to explore the many roads to recovery. With two years of hands-on experience, Shandelle brings a fresh perspective on how recovery can be as unique as the individuals going through it. She shares her own story and the lessons she's learned working with her local Sober Squad Chapter.
Shandelle emphasizes the importance of self-defined recovery goals and culturally specific programs that resonate with diverse communities. This conversation isn't just about finding one path; it's about recognizing and respecting the multitude of ways people can find their way back to health. They discuss the evolving landscape of harm reduction, the crucial role of peer support, and how stigma still affects those in recovery.
If you're looking for an episode that challenges traditional views and offers a compassionate, inclusive approach to recovery, this one's for you.
