Voices of Change: Addressing Mental Health in the Black Community

Starting the awareness campaigns and sharing our stories...hopefully, as we grow older, we would love to have centers where people can come in and have help and do other activities.
Imagine losing a loved one to mental illness and addiction, only to realize that the support they needed was out of reach. This is the heartbreaking reality that spurred Marie Philippe Remy and her daughter Lydia Philippe into action. After the tragic loss of Fabiola Philippe in 2017, they founded Fabiola’s Addiction and Mental Health Awareness & Support Foundation (FAHMAS) in 2018.
In this episode of 'Life Unscripted', host Janice Arnoldi sits down with Marie to discuss the foundation's mission and the unique challenges faced by the Black community when it comes to mental health and addiction. Marie opens up about her sister Fabiola's struggles and the systemic barriers that prevented her from getting the help she needed. The conversation touches on the critical need for culturally sensitive mental health services and the power of storytelling in breaking down stigma.
You'll also hear about the impact of COVID-19 on mental health and addiction, and how creative outlets can play a role in promoting wellness. With a focus on hope and future possibilities, this episode is a poignant reminder of the importance of community and advocacy in creating change.
