Gaby Campagna's Fight for Life: Overcoming Alcoholic Liver Disease

But you know, when you're feeling healthy and life is good and then something doesn't go your way like it's still, I could easily slip into that self-pity and all that, and thank god I have these tools now to not be in this like victim role.
Imagine waking up in a hospital bed, your body ravaged by years of alcohol abuse, and realizing you've been given a second chance. This is the harrowing yet inspiring story of Gabrielle 'Gaby' Campagna, who joins Omar Pinto on The SHAIR Recovery Podcast to share her journey from the brink of death to a thriving, alcohol-free life.
Gaby's battle with alcoholism began at just 15 and spiraled out of control until, at 36, her liver and kidneys shut down, landing her in a coma. Despite the grim prognosis, she survived and embarked on a two-year journey to reclaim her health. But Gaby's story doesn't end there. After years of 'white-knuckling' it and even a relapse at 40, she finally sought help through an outpatient treatment program.
Completing the 12-step-based program was a turning point for her, leading to lasting sobriety since July 23, 2013. In this episode, Gaby discusses the importance of accountability groups like AA and online communities such as SoberNation in her recovery process. She also delves into the challenges of codependency and the transformative power of empathy. Gaby has turned her experience into advocacy, working to make outpatient care more accessible and affordable.
She recommends reading Brene Brown's 'The Gifts of Imperfection' and the 'Emotional Sobriety' chapter from AA's second edition for anyone seeking additional support. Her story is a beacon of hope for those struggling with addiction or supporting a loved one through recovery. Tune in to hear Gaby's remarkable tale of survival, resilience, and advocacy, and discover practical insights for your own recovery journey.
