Ian Romans: Finding Strength in Recovery from Heroin Addiction

Courage is probably the most fundamental one, because without the courage to want to step up to you and do it, you're not going to gain nothing else. The rest is gain through working the steps.
What happens when life throws every possible challenge your way? For Ian Romans, it meant a journey through the depths of heroin addiction and back. Raised by an addict mother and an abusive stepfather, Ian's early years were a whirlwind of foster care and jail. He dismissed Narcotics Anonymous (NA) early on because his parents would stop by their dealer's house on the way home from meetings.
But when he decided to turn his life around, NA became his lifeline to sobriety. In this episode of The SHAIR Recovery Podcast, hosted by Omar Pinto, Ian shares his incredible story of transformation. He talks about how courage became the cornerstone of his recovery. Ian prays every morning, night, and before any significant moment, including this interview. He believes that without the courage to step up, you won't gain anything else in recovery.
Working the steps of NA helped him conquer fear, anger, and self-doubt, while humility allowed him to accept his limitations and seek help. Connection played a crucial role in Ian's journey. He emphasizes the importance of community and support, whether it's through WhatsApp recovery group chats or local meetings. For Ian, the magic happens when you're part of something bigger than yourself. His advice for newcomers? Never give up and keep working the steps. It's painful but worth it.
Ian's story is a testament to the power of courage, humility, and connection in overcoming addiction and finding a life filled with happiness and fulfillment.
