A Mother's Path: Sobriety and Autism

No, my children's autism did not cause for me to become an alcoholic. Their diagnoses should have been theirs from the beginning, but gratefully, A Few Years into their life challenges, I was able to get sober and learn how to be rid of selfishness and to focus on being present with them, advocating for them, teaching them how to advocate for themselves and offer them a home life that was free of a mother, full of self-hatred, full of self-pity, full of insecurities and incapable of being present.
Sarah Elizabeth opens up about her journey through alcoholism and motherhood in this heartfelt episode of 'Sober Gratitudes'. From dreaming of having children to facing the overwhelming challenges of raising two sons diagnosed with autism, Sarah's story is one of resilience and transformation. She candidly shares how she turned to alcohol to cope with the stress, often drinking in secret, and how people have asked if her children's autism made her an alcoholic.
Sarah clarifies that while autism didn't cause her alcoholism, it did accelerate her hitting rock bottom, which she now sees as a blessing in disguise. This turning point pushed her towards sobriety, making her a better parent at a crucial time in her children's lives. Sarah reflects on her nearly nine-year journey of sobriety, describing how it has smoothed out the rough patches in her life.
With Alcoholics Anonymous and a strong recovery program, she has shed the chaos, anxiety, and self-pity that once plagued her. Today, she navigates life's normal bumps with ease and finds joy in simple, peaceful living. In addition to sharing her personal story, Sarah discusses the creation of 'Sober Gratitudes' and how it has become a platform for sharing inspiring stories of recovery.
She also talks about her new support group, Sober Autism Parent Community, which meets weekly on Zoom to support parents or caregivers of children on the autism spectrum who are also navigating sobriety. This episode is a powerful reminder of the transformative power of recovery and the importance of being present for one's children. Sarah's journey offers hope and inspiration to anyone facing similar challenges.
