Richard's Revival: From Distillery Roots to Church Community
The teachings of the church have also made me believe that God is training me for something big. This motivates me towards this work and towards my future, rather than feeling stuck in a difficult job in the hot parking lot, far from the central action of the church office.
Ever wondered how faith and community can change a life? Richard's story in 'I Closed the Depot: Addiction and Recovery in Kampala' is a powerful example. Growing up in a family of distillers in central Uganda, Richard started drinking at a young age. His move to Kampala didn't ease his struggles; instead, he found himself sinking deeper into alcoholism and isolation. But a chance encounter with a Pentecostal church altered his path. Drawn to their teachings, Richard began attending services.
Though his battle with addiction was far from over, the church provided him with a supportive community and a sense of purpose. He started with small jobs, eventually earning a position in the church's parking lot. This role not only gave him a new sense of responsibility but also helped him build trust and relationships within the community. Richard's journey underscores the profound impact of faith and communal support in overcoming addiction.
