Jeff Johnston: Turning Heartbreak into a Mission of Hope
when I stopped talking about them, that's when they die.
Picture this: one phone call changes everything. For Jeff Johnston, that call came on October 4, 2016, shattering his world with the news that his oldest son, Seth, had died from fentanyl poisoning at just 23. Before that day, Jeff seemed to have it all—a thriving career and a loving family. But in an instant, he was faced with a choice: let grief consume him or channel his pain into something meaningful.
Jeff chose the latter, embarking on a mission to raise awareness about substance use and addiction among teens and young adults. He stepped back from his career as a financial advisor and began speaking at schools and community events. Jeff even joined the board of a local treatment facility where Seth had spent time. In 2020, he founded Choices Network, Ltd., a non-profit aimed at educating kids, parents, teachers, and coaches about the dangers of substance use.
In this episode of 'Recovery Revolution Live', Jeff opens up about his journey from heartbreak to hope. He discusses the various pathways to recovery, the mental health struggles of Gen Z, and how comparing grief can impact healing. Jeff's story is a powerful reminder that we all have the power to choose how we respond to tragedy. His message is both heart-wrenching and inspiring, offering a glimpse into a world where hope and healing are possible.
As Jeff poignantly puts it, 'when I stopped talking about them, that's when they die'. Tune in to hear Jeff's incredible journey of living undeterred.
