Creating Safe Spaces: Allison Rocca on Student Mental Health

The biggest thing is acknowledge, care tells. This year, compared to last year, I feel like a lot of the students feel like they belong in the school a lot more, just because I think we're all here, all the activities are running and they've sort of started to find their place that they fit.
Imagine a place where every student feels seen and supported, no matter what they're going through. That's the vision Allison Rocca, a licensed clinical social worker, brings to life in this episode of USRA Coalition's 'Let's Talk About It'. Allison, a key member of the Northern Highlands Wellness Department, has been instrumental in assisting over 250 students with their mental health challenges.
She dives into the strategies that have made a real difference, from one-on-one support to broader initiatives aimed at fostering a sense of belonging among students. Allison also sheds light on the NH PASS series, a four-part program designed to educate parents on critical issues like negative body image and its impact on teenagers. The series aims to bridge the gap between parents and teens, offering tools and insights to help families navigate these complex topics together.
Post-pandemic life has brought unique challenges for students, and Allison discusses how social adjustments have played a role in their mental health. Her approach emphasizes the importance of community and support systems in helping students thrive. Whether you're a parent, educator, or someone interested in mental health, this episode offers valuable perspectives on creating environments where students can feel safe and supported.
Tune in to learn how small changes can make a big difference in the lives of young people facing mental health challenges.
