Jessica Kent: From Shackles to Sobriety

The opposite of addiction is connection, as it was said. But I think you know who am I to say that what someone else is doing is wrong. So even in My Nine Years of sobriety I've learned so much, changed my opinion so many times on what can and cannot work and hopefully, with an open mind, I'm going to keep changing that.
Ever wondered what it's like to hit rock bottom and then claw your way back to a life of purpose? Jessica Kent knows this journey all too well. Growing up in a home marred by addiction and mental health issues, Jessica took her first drink at just twelve years old, feeling an instant, albeit temporary, sense of relief. This early encounter with alcohol quickly spiraled into a dependence on pain pills and eventually heroin.
To sustain her addiction and avoid the crushing poverty around her, Jessica turned to selling drugs—a decision that landed her in prison. But Jessica's story takes an even more dramatic turn. Unbeknownst to her when she was incarcerated, she was pregnant. Nine months later, she gave birth to her daughter while shackled to a hospital bed, an experience that would break many but somehow became the catalyst for her transformation.
After serving her sentence, Jessica didn't just rebuild her life; she redefined it. She earned a bachelor's degree and started a YouTube channel where she shares her story and advocates for prison reform. Today, with over 300,000 subscribers, Jessica is nine years sober and a vocal advocate for change.
In this gripping episode of 'Sober Nation FM', Jessica opens up about the trauma of giving birth in prison, the hurdles of parenting behind bars, and the daunting challenges ex-convicts face upon release. Her story is a testament to the power of resilience and the importance of connection in the journey to sobriety. If you're looking for a tale of hope, transformation, and the relentless human spirit, this episode is a must-listen.
