Richard's Road: From Teenage Drinking to Life-Altering Recovery
I was just lonely and I got involved with some other substances.
Richard's journey into the depths of addiction started innocently enough, with a cheap six-pack of beer at just 12 years old. What began as youthful experimentation quickly spiraled into a 20-year chase for that initial carefree high. College in Chicago brought more than education; it brought an escalation from alcohol to marijuana, and eventually to crack cocaine.
His travels took him to Jamaica, where he lived a pseudo-Rasta lifestyle working on a pot farm, but his adventures were marred by substance abuse. A horrific car accident in New Orleans left him hospitalized for nearly a year, marking a turning point in his life. In this episode of Steppin' Out Radio, Richard recounts his tumultuous journey and the brain trauma he endured.
Through the 12-step program, he found a path to recovery and emphasizes the critical role of a supportive environment. Richard's story is a raw and honest portrayal of the struggles and triumphs in the battle against addiction.
