Annie Highwater's Path to Peace: Finding Hope Amid Addiction Chaos

Recovery is a beautiful thing, and it's possible for any family.
What happens when life feels like it's spiraling out of control due to addiction? In this heartfelt episode of 'Coming Up for Air', Dominique sits down with Annie Highwater, a writer, speaker, and family advocate, to discuss her tumultuous journey through addiction chaos to her current role in peer support. Annie candidly shares her experiences growing up in a world filled with craziness and dysfunction, where hope seemed like a distant dream.
She recalls, 'When life feels hopeless and you feel like everyone around you is losing their mind... I was so surrounded by it, I never saw a way out!' Despite the overwhelming odds, Annie found her way to recovery and now dedicates her life to helping others do the same. Her story is a beacon of hope for families grappling with addiction, reminding them that recovery is not just a possibility but a beautiful reality.
Annie emphasizes the crucial role families play in the recovery process, stressing the importance of everyone doing the work to get well.
She explains, 'How many times do we see somebody go off to treatment and they go through detox, maybe IOP, and they have some momentum and some time under their belt and then they go back to a family where no one else has done the work and the system is the same?' Her message is clear: recovery is a collective effort. Annie also highlights the significance of self-care and maintaining calm in difficult situations.
She notes, 'If I'm chaotic or screaming, yelling, cussing, investigating, harassing, interrogating an adult child or another family member- and I'm surging in this conflict something's infected.' Her insights into introspection and practical awareness offer valuable guidance for families navigating these turbulent waters. Tune in to hear Annie's inspiring journey and learn how peace and healing are achievable even in the midst of addiction chaos.
