Jamie Niven: From Hollywood Glamour to Battling Alcohol Addiction

I think I'm very lucky to be in a position where I can pick up the phone and I can get someone on the phone to deal with my friend who's got cancer, or the parent or the child, whatever it is.
Jamie Niven’s life might seem like a Hollywood fairy tale at first glance, but beneath the surface, it was anything but. As the son of Academy Award-winning actor David Niven, Jamie grew up in the glitzy world of fame and privilege. However, his story took a different turn when his mother passed away when he was just six months old. This early loss left Jamie with a lingering sense of loneliness that haunted him for decades.
In this episode of 'Heart of the Matter', Jamie sits down with Elizabeth Vargas to share how his mother's death shaped his life and contributed to a 50-year battle with alcohol. Despite the glamorous backdrop, Jamie's journey was fraught with challenges, including the stigma around addiction and mental health. At 65, he found the strength to quit drinking and now dedicates himself to helping others through his role as chair of Partnership to End Addiction’s Board of Directors.
Tune in to hear Jamie’s candid reflections on his upbringing, the impact of loss, and the power of community support in overcoming addiction.
