Madeline's Path to Sobriety: Embracing the Third Step and Facing Fears

I think the last therapy session I had with her when I was in Boone was: I was sitting on the lawn at school and I was just crying.
Imagine growing up with both parents in recovery. That’s Madeline’s story, and she shares it candidly on this episode of the Boiled Owl AA Recovery Podcast. She opens up about her hilarious last drunk and how she found sobriety at just 20 years old. One of the key elements in her journey has been the Third Step, which has become a cornerstone of her recovery process.
Madeline talks about how this step helps her stay grounded and connected to her higher power, providing much-needed stability in her life. Madeline doesn't shy away from discussing the challenges she’s faced, particularly when it comes to fear. The Fourth and Fifth Steps were daunting for her, but she found that writing out her inventory and using the Third Step prayer were powerful tools for confronting those fears.
Her story highlights the importance of having a sponsor and seeking medical help to address underlying mental health issues. Service work has also played a significant role in Madeline’s sobriety. By helping others, she’s been able to stay accountable and find joy in her recovery journey. She emphasizes that sobriety isn't just about abstaining from alcohol; it’s about finding happiness in the simple things and adjusting expectations to appreciate life's small pleasures.
Madeline’s story is a beacon of hope for anyone navigating their own path to sobriety. Her experiences offer valuable insights into overcoming fear, the power of community support, and the importance of working a program. Tune in to hear Madeline's inspiring journey and discover how you too can find joy in sobriety.
