Drew's Path to Sobriety: From Despair to Hope
I decided I was going to stay in the area, cause I had originally, you know, always planning on going home back to my hometown after I finished treatment and I got close and I got really squirrely and I said: all right, let me finish the summer through here because I'd already had to drop my classes and I want to be able to go back to school till August.
Drew's story is one of those that grabs you from the start. Picture a young man sneaking airplane bottles into a seventh-grade dance, where fun was synonymous with drinking. Drew's early years were marked by a troubling relationship with alcohol that seemed to overshadow everything else. By the age of 24, he was already facing the consequences of his actions, including multiple DUIs that landed him in treatment as a last-ditch effort to avoid jail time.
But even a major health scare at 30, where he was staring death in the face, wasn't enough to make him quit drinking immediately. What finally clicked for Drew was understanding the science behind alcoholism. This newfound knowledge was his first step toward sobriety, and on February 25, 2008, he took the plunge and committed to a life without alcohol. In this episode of the Boiled Owl AA Recovery Podcast, hosts Don and Sam dive deep into Drew's journey.
They discuss the pivotal moments that led him to sobriety and the role of taking action in his recovery. Drew emphasizes how crucial it was to build a strong support system and maintain his sobriety through various challenges, including chronic pain. The conversation also touches on the controversial topic of CBD use in recovery, offering different perspectives for listeners to consider.
Whether you're just starting your own journey or looking for motivation to keep going, Drew's story is a testament to the power of resilience and the importance of understanding one's addiction. Tune in for an episode filled with raw honesty, practical advice, and a dose of inspiration.
