I think a lot of folks that kind of walk into the bear trap that is addiction. I played Griffin West Texas, played high school football, the whole Friday night lights thing. And I didn't know at the time, like that it was because of that, right? I was, I kind of got, I got made fun of a lot for it. And I think when I started taking drugs, when I felt when I was introduced to drugs and alcohol, I felt comfortable. I was able to talk to people better. And I think that's just such a huge theme in my story is that drugs and alcohol, they filled a hole for me and they made it to where I didn't have to feel the emotions that I felt and I didn't have to feel the pain that I felt. And it's interesting as I've learned everything I've learned about addiction and the disease that is alcoholism and addiction, it's not even about the drugs and alcohol. It's about this escapism and this pain that I think a lot of addicts and alcoholics are trying to cope with. And this is the way that they self-medicate, or at least for me, that's what it was for me.
Hunter Montgomery's story is one of raw honesty and incredible resilience. In this episode of 'Sober Stories', host Beth Bowen sits down with the former Bachelorette contestant to delve into his tumultuous journey through opioid addiction and recovery. What began as a simple prescription for Vicodin after a football injury spiraled into a battle with alcoholism and harder substances like heroin.
Hunter opens up about his struggles, including a near-prison experience and an overdose that became a pivotal turning point in his life. His candid discussion with his grandfather provides a touching generational perspective on addiction, while his analogy comparing addiction to a shellfish allergy paints a vivid picture of its life-threatening nature.
After two stints in rehab and humbling experiences like bagging groceries, Hunter's story is not just about overcoming personal demons but also about the broader need for open conversations around sobriety. He passionately advocates for making 'sobriety a trend', emphasizing its importance for both personal healing and societal acceptance. This episode is a must-listen for anyone seeking to understand the complexities of addiction and the power of community support in recovery.
