Chris Herren: From NBA Stardom to Addiction Recovery Advocate

I really hope that you guys find a little bit of- I don't know- strength in some of the words he speaks... You know that's the beauty of living One Day at a time, right.
Imagine having it all—fame, talent, and a promising future—only to see it crumble under the weight of addiction. In this compelling episode of the Addict II Athlete Podcast, Coach Blu Robinson sits down with former NBA player Chris Herren to talk about his rollercoaster journey. Chris was a high school basketball sensation and a McDonald’s All-American who played for Boston College and Fresno State.
He even made it to the NBA, being picked 33rd in the 1999 draft by the Denver Nuggets. But beneath the surface, Chris was battling a severe addiction to drugs and alcohol. During his time with the Nuggets, Chris found some stability thanks to a supportive team that knew about his struggles. However, returning home during the offseason reignited old habits, leading to a downward spiral when he joined the Boston Celtics and suffered an injury.
His story doesn't end there, though. Chris turned his life around and founded the Herren Project, an organization dedicated to helping others overcome addiction. In this episode, Chris shares candid insights into his personal battles and the pivotal moments that led him to recovery. He talks about the importance of living one day at a time and having a strong support system.
Whether you're in recovery yourself or supporting someone who is, Chris's story offers hope and practical advice for navigating the challenging path to sobriety.
