Unheard Voices: Navigating Adoption as an Adult
Community is so important for adoptees and so people can have that opportunity to talk to each other and process together and know that like, oh, I wasn't the only one who's in my family system that race was never acknowledged or I wasn't allowed to say like, I'm really upset, I was adopted because they, a lot of adoptees, feel like they have to, you know, hide that from their adoptive parents and feel grateful, and that does a number on their nervous systems and their identity and mental health.
Ever wondered how adoption continues to shape lives well into adulthood? In this episode of 'The Right Mind Media Podcast', hosts Jon Cohan and Gabrielle 'Abby' Dean sit down with Lisa Coppola, author of 'Voices Unheard: A Reflective Journal for Adults', and Kelly DeBennedetto, Executive Director and Clinical Director of Boston Post Adoption Resources. Together, they explore the often overlooked challenges that adult adoptees face.
From grappling with identity issues to finding a sense of belonging, this conversation sheds light on the unique emotional landscape of those who were adopted. The guests emphasize the power of community and writing as therapeutic tools, offering practical advice for those seeking support. Whether you’re an adoptee yourself or know someone who is, this episode provides valuable insights into the ongoing journey of adoption.
