Norman Curtiss: A Pharmacist's Journey from Addiction to Advocacy
Sometimes I'd have to have some just to function. So I had gotten to the point where it's like I need to do something. I never asked for help really, and thank god that I've gotten a lot better at that at asking for help, because I was so bad at that for so long, and it's a very valuable skill to acquire.
Ever wondered how someone can turn a life marred by addiction into one dedicated to helping others? Meet Norman Curtiss, a pharmacist whose journey from substance abuse to recovery is nothing short of inspiring. Growing up, Norman was always active in sports, but his twenties and early thirties were overshadowed by his struggle with alcohol and Adderall. His turning point came on June 2, 2018, when a call to Lionrock marked the beginning of his sobriety from alcohol.
However, his battle with Adderall persisted until July 2019, culminating in his arrest for diverting medication from the pharmacy where he worked. In this episode of 'The Courage to Change', Norman opens up about the challenges and stigma that come with addiction, especially in the healthcare field. He talks candidly about the false narratives people tell themselves to justify their behavior and stresses the importance of seeking help.
Norman credits Lionrock for playing a crucial role in his recovery journey and highlights the dangers of prescription drug addiction, debunking the myth that they are safer than illicit drugs. Norman also shares the unexpected benefits of online recovery meetings, which have helped him build strong bonds and supportive relationships. Now living a sober and active lifestyle, he works part-time as a pharmacist and is taking classes to become a physician assistant. His goal?
