Chris Therien: From NHL Battles to Sobriety Advocate

Life is about falling down and how you pick yourself back up, and to me that's been everything to me. I want to get that be able to set up like a almost like their own web page, where guys can then kind of manage it, have people work, you know, work for them through, through whether it's social media, whatever.
Imagine skating through 12 years and 764 games in the NHL, giving it your all every night, while secretly battling a fierce addiction. That's the story of Chris Therien. Known for his dedication on the ice, Chris was also grappling with alcoholism, a struggle that intensified after the tragic death of his sister. By 2006, he hit rock bottom with a staggering blood alcohol level of 0.63, a point where most would not survive.
It was then that Chris checked into Caron Treatment Center and began his path to recovery. In this episode of 'The Payoff with Pete', Chris opens up about his journey from the depths of addiction to over a decade of sobriety. He shares candidly about the pressures of professional hockey, the isolation during COVID-19, and the importance of self-awareness in recovery.
Now an advocate for Caron, Chris dedicates his life to helping other athletes navigate their post-career lives with purpose and meaning. Chris's story is a testament to the power of support and the right mindset in overcoming addiction. He talks about forgiveness, redemption, and his vision for a new initiative aimed at aiding athletes in their transition after sports.
This episode is a must-listen for anyone touched by addiction, offering hope and practical advice for embracing a fulfilling life in sobriety.
