Glenn D's journey is a testament to the power of service and fellowship in recovery. Born and raised in Bayview-Hunters Point, San Francisco, Glenn faced numerous challenges from an early age. His stepfather was an alcoholic, and his father eventually died from cirrhosis of the liver. Glenn's own struggles with addiction led to multiple stints in jail and countless visits to San Francisco General Hospital.
His life was a cycle of getting sick, being admitted for observation, and then getting back on the streets only to be arrested again. But his story took a turn when he was sent to drug court and ordered to attend outpatient rehab in his old neighbourhood. Despite knowing all the dealers and using daily, he kept attending classes. His turning point came when he was sent to the Redwood Center inpatient program.
Initially sceptical about the program, he decided to give it a shot. After 90 days, he graduated but still faced challenges in finding employment. With support from his godmother and a new sponsor, Terry, Glenn found stability by attending meetings at the Dry Dock, San Francisco's most active AA site. He became a caretaker for his godmother until her passing and later moved in with another AA member who needed help.
Glenn now works at the Dry Dock's customer service desk and lives by the motto of never turning anyone away. His story highlights the importance of community and support in overcoming addiction.
