MySafe Society: A New Approach to Safer Supply and Addiction Recovery

MySafe Society offers a safe supply program that can meet people where they live, and so people don't have to travel very far. It's a life-changing program for a lot of people.
Imagine having a lifeline when you're drowning in addiction. That's what MySafe Society offers to around 130 people in British Columbia. This safer supply pilot project provides a prescription for Dilaudid, an opioid used to treat pain, as a safer alternative to dangerous street drugs. Participants access their medication through a unique machine that uses a biometric scan of their hand, ensuring they receive their prescribed dose safely and securely.
In this episode of People First Radio, the hosts dive into the heart of the MySafe Society program. They explore how this initiative is not just about providing medication but also about restoring hope and stability to those who have been battling addiction.
One participant shares how the program helped them escape the grip of addiction and avoid the dangerous streets, stating, 'Even though it wasn't as strong as fentanyl, it definitely helps people not feel dope-sick.' This kind of support can be life-changing. The episode also addresses the broader impact of safer supply programs like MySafe Society. With over 1,700 deaths from illicit drug toxicity in British Columbia last year alone, the need for such initiatives is critical.
These programs offer a glimmer of hope by meeting people where they are and providing them with the tools they need to make positive changes in their lives. However, the discussion doesn't shy away from the challenges and misconceptions surrounding safer supply programs. Concerns about drug diversion are addressed, but the focus remains on the humanity of those struggling with addiction.
As one program representative poignantly notes, 'When we judge people who use drugs, we forget they are someone's brother, sister, partner, or friend.' Tune in to this episode to learn more about how MySafe Society is making a tangible difference in the fight against the opioid crisis. It's an eye-opening look at how innovative solutions can bring hope and change to those who need it most.
