Shay's Triumph Over Trauma: A Journey of Sobriety and Mental Health

My mess is now my message. You know, when you find out how many people you would disappoint.
Ever wondered how someone can turn their life around after years of battling addiction and trauma? Crystal Morrell's 'Sober Onions' brings you an eye-opening conversation with Shay from Utah, a wife and mother who has faced some of life's toughest challenges. Shay grew up in a Mormon family with a complicated relationship with alcohol, surrounded by conflicting messages about drinking. Her journey is marked by battles with depression, sexual and religious trauma, and suicidal thoughts.
After 16 years of a love/hate relationship with booze, Shay hit rock bottom. A heartfelt letter from her younger sister became the catalyst for change, leading her to a 90-day in-patient rehab program. Shay's story doesn't end there; she experienced relapse and mental deterioration that landed her in a mental institution in 2019. It was then she asked herself the pivotal question, 'Are you being real with yourself?' and decided to make a lasting change.
Since May 6th, 2020, Shay has been on her final sober journey, focusing on her daughters, husband, and most importantly, herself. In this episode, Shay shares how she turned her mess into her message, using her experiences to inspire others. She discusses the importance of accountability in recovery and how intensive outpatient treatment during the COVID-19 pandemic helped her stay on track. Shay also touches on the benefits of sharing her story and becoming a sober influencer.
If you're looking for a tale of resilience, hope, and the power of self-reflection, this episode is a must-listen.
