Mike L’s Sobriety Story: The Power of Community and Honesty

I would have been a little more social, you know, and by social I simply mean showing up five minutes early and maybe lingering a little bit afterward...I've never all the meetings I've been to in Five Years, or wherever I wanted to approach somebody to say thank you for sharing- or this was interesting, you shed light on this- or whatever the person was, whatever demographics they were, they were always willing to stop and talk to me, even if only for a minute.
What does it take to stay sober for the long haul? In this episode of Seasons of Sobriety, host Howard M. sits down with Mike L., who has been sober since January 7, 2014. Mike’s journey offers a raw and heartfelt look at the ups and downs of recovery, shedding light on the crucial role of community and honesty in maintaining sobriety. Mike shares how he first met Howard and began his journey with Alcoholics Anonymous.
Initially skeptical and resistant, Mike would often leave meetings with a bottle hidden under his seat, lying to his sponsor about his drinking habits. It wasn't until he had a small but profound experience with a higher power that he began to take his sobriety seriously. Howard’s non-threatening demeanor and words of wisdom helped Mike realize he needed to step aside and let a higher power guide him.
A significant theme in Mike's story is the importance of working with others and staying social. He admits that if he could turn back time, he would have been more engaged at AA meetings—arriving early, staying late, and making connections. He also emphasizes the value of being honest with his sponsor and diligently working through the steps. These changes, he believes, would have accelerated his recovery. Humility is another key takeaway from Mike's experience.
He used to think humility meant being lesser, but now he sees it as being open to learning and growing. This shift in perspective has allowed him to build meaningful friendships through AA and receive invaluable support from his sponsor. Mike L.’s story is a powerful reminder that sobriety is not a solo journey. By connecting with others, being truthful, and staying open to growth, long-term recovery becomes achievable.
Tune in to hear Mike’s insights and find inspiration for your own path to sobriety.
