Mike Grant: Running Towards Recovery and a New Life
I think two things were really vital for me. I've always been a little bit of a runner. I think it saved people's lives and if it works for you, awesome, it doesn't work for everyone.
Mike Grant’s journey from habitual drunk driving to running ultra-marathons is nothing short of remarkable. In this episode of 'The Addiction Podcast - Point of No Return', Mike opens up about his transformation from an alcoholic to a therapist and ultra-runner. His memoir, (Re)Making A Sandwich, chronicles six years of treatment and the emotional rollercoaster of recovery. Early in his sobriety, Mike discovered running as a way to cope with stress and manage his emotions.
What started as short runs to the park with his young son evolved into a passion that saw him completing six marathons, two 50-mile races, and even a 100-mile ultra-marathon. But Mike’s story isn’t just about running; it’s about finding unique ways to heal. He went back to school, earning his LCSW and becoming a certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor.
Now, he works with the Alano Club in Portland, where he co-founded RUN TRG, a running club for people in recovery. Funded by a SAMSHA grant, this initiative also provides free CrossFit classes. Mike’s experience underscores the importance of finding what works for you in recovery. Whether it’s running, therapy, or support groups, his story is a testament to the power of alternative approaches in overcoming addiction.
This episode is perfect for anyone looking for inspiration and practical advice on their own recovery journey.
