Love and Recovery: Robert and Tish's Journey Together

The isolation that you know that bottoming out drinking can be about and the loneliness and the sort of internal deadness was leaving me. I got started on a wonderful new career which took me out of the New York Area, and I didn't like the aa meetings in this new city, stopped going to meetings and, within A Year, decided that it would not be a bad idea, that I decided that a glass of champagne could be interpreted as either a greased sled to hell or that it was percent alcohol.
Picture this: two people, both battling their own demons, finding solace and love in the most unexpected place—a twelve step meeting. That’s the story of Robert and Tish, an engaged couple who met while attending recovery sessions. Robert's struggle with alcohol and drugs spanned 36 years, rooted in a family culture that normalized drinking.
He was an anxious child whose parents divorced early on, leading him to discover alcohol as a temporary escape from his fears at just eight years old. Growing up in South Central Los Angeles, he eventually joined a gang, further entrenching himself in a life of substance abuse. Tish’s journey started even earlier. Her father gave her sips of gin and tonic when she was just three.
By seven, she experienced her first drunken episode, encouraged by her father on Easter Sunday. At thirteen, she was sent to boarding school where she had easy access to alcohol and began abusing amphetamines. By nineteen, her kidneys had failed due to her substance abuse. In this episode of Steppin' Out Radio, Robert and Tish open up about their tumultuous paths to recovery.
They share how their childhood traumas and anxieties led them down dark roads but also how the twelve step program became a beacon of hope. From gang culture to family dynamics and career changes, they cover it all. Their story is a testament to the transformative power of support and love. Listeners will gain a deeper understanding of the real-life struggles behind addiction and the incredible resilience required to overcome it.
Whether you’re on your own journey to sobriety or supporting someone who is, Robert and Tish’s story offers a poignant reminder that recovery is possible—and sometimes, love can be found in the most unexpected places.
