The reason that I'm here and the reason that I'm sticking with fourth d as a really wonderful a home group online is because we get to meet with everyone everywhere and whoever wants to come is welcome from far over man but johnny oysters out there in australia or whatever and he's part of that melbourne group or wherever it is that they're having those meetings. It just, it's, I would never have had that opportunity if i hadn't had this sort of closing off to open up and that's really what this format is for me it's all been all about like it just expanded your your recovery horizon 100 marty and you just keep looking around the room in a full way saying the people that are here and the people that are there are just as important you know let's not prioritize it i'm going to keep it simple share my experience strength and hope but be available you know yep that's really did i answer your question mark yes okay no i you know it's it's are we there for the newcomer are we keeping the message available for somebody who's looking for it and you know there's the way that my sobriety my spirituality stays strong is that like you, Marty, I hear a lot of what my higher power, you know, needs me to hear through other people. You know, I am in the same way that I couldn't imagine my life not drinking. that I couldn't imagine my life not drinking. I can't imagine my life now without my beautiful AA community. Marty, you have made us think so hard and you have you have brought us along your incredible decades long journey of you know taking shots of the wine at the Christmas party to like showing up to a detox unit on the seventh floor with all the other, with all the other people and their slippers and their no shoelaces and robes. Um, and you're, you know, you being a part of my day of this incredible conversation, um, and sharing your experience, strength, and hope. Marty now, 2023, runs into Marty then, pre-1992. What do you, present Marty, say to that Marty? Like, I don't know. tools and so get used to it man you know and i think it would be that like you're in the right place right that's i heard that a lot early on you're in the right place and um stay humble page 58 rings rings so true and the 12 and 12 for me is like you'll understand a lot more you'll have an opportunity to understand and be understood and it's really important to get to think differently well
Imagine being a teenager, lost in the fog of heavy drinking, and then finding a way out. That's Marty's story, shared in this episode of the 4th Dimensioners Podcast. Hosts Jessica M and Marc C sit down with Marty to explore his journey from the depths of alcohol addiction to the clarity of sobriety.
Marty opens up about his early experiences with counseling and the struggles of his teenage years, marked by excessive drinking and self-reliance that led to an unmanageable life. His turning point came when he decided to seek help and focus on his academic studies, realizing he needed to distance himself from drinking peers. One of the most touching aspects of Marty's story is his experience with Alcoholics Anonymous (AA).
He talks about the crucial support he found in AA meetings and the 'meeting after the meeting', a space where newcomers are warmly welcomed. Marty also shares how his wife, Joni, played a significant role in his recovery, offering understanding and support that others couldn't provide. His involvement in AA didn't stop at attending meetings; he engaged in service work and counseling, emphasizing the importance of staying connected to the recovery community.
The conversation takes a closer look at the differences between in-person and online AA meetings, with Marty reflecting on the positive connections he's made in both settings. He underscores the value of a diverse recovery community and the need for ongoing support. If you're looking for a story that highlights the power of community, spirituality, and personal growth in recovery, Marty's journey is a must-listen.
