Mandy Ogunmokun: From Dark Beginnings to Guiding Light

No one is one thing and they'll surprise you... It's about a slow burn, you know it's a reaction, a self-defense reaction that happens.
Imagine starting life with the odds stacked against you. Mandy Ogunmokun's journey is nothing short of extraordinary. Born into a world of exploitation and trauma, Mandy's early years were marred by the harsh realities of being the daughter and granddaughter of sex workers. Forced into prostitution by her grandmother at the tender age of four, Mandy's path seemed predestined for hardship. However, her story takes a remarkable turn.
Despite battling heroin addiction and spending two decades in and out of HMP Holloway as an inmate, Mandy found a way to rewrite her destiny. At 45, she returned to Holloway, not as a prisoner, but as a substance misuse worker with the Forward Trust. Her transformation was so impactful that she was chosen to carry the Olympic Torch to the Guildhall in the lead-up to the London 2012 Olympics, a testament to her incredible work in addiction recovery.
In this episode of 'More Than My Past', hosted by Jason Flemyng, Mandy opens up about her tumultuous past and her inspiring journey towards helping others. As the founder of the Treasures Foundation, she now dedicates her life to supporting women with histories of drug abuse, offending, and homelessness. This episode is a beacon of hope, demonstrating that no one is defined by their past.
Mandy's story underscores the power of compassion and understanding in breaking cycles of abuse and stigma. Tune in to hear how one woman's resilience can light the way for many others.
