Episode Overview

  • Nelson's journey of cognitive challenges and addiction impact
  • Exploring the damage caused by concussions and substance abuse
  • Finding gratitude amidst cognitive decline
  • Overcoming impulsivity and working around the 'fried wiring'
  • Encouraging gratitude for unscathed aspects of personal well-being
I definitely think there's parts of my system that were damaged a bit, but my impulsivity for sure. But at least I can deal with them. I can figure out solutions to work around the fried wiring. And so if you're nodding along and thinking about this, I'd encourage you to take a moment, feel grateful for the wires that you did not sizzle.
Imagine feeling like the world is speeding by at 65 MPH while you're stuck in the slow lane at 35. That’s exactly how Nelson H. felt in 2017 when he started grappling with cognitive issues. In this episode of 'LOL Sober', Nelson shares his rollercoaster journey through memory lapses, constant fatigue, and the scary haze that clouded his mind.
He takes you back to a sledding accident in 2015 that left him with a nasty concussion – not his first, but probably his fifth. Add to that a few sports-related concussions and one from a drunken scuffle in college, and you’ve got a recipe for some serious brain fog. His doctor’s diagnosis pointed to a hectic life and those multiple head injuries as culprits.
Nelson humorously recounts his trip to the neurologist, the battery of tests he endured, and the vitamins prescribed to help his brain function better. But this episode isn’t just about the struggles; it’s about finding gratitude amidst the chaos. Nelson encourages listeners to appreciate the 'wires that you did not sizzle' and find ways to work around the damage.
With his signature blend of humor and heartfelt storytelling, Nelson turns what could be a somber topic into an engaging and uplifting narrative. Perfect for anyone dealing with cognitive challenges or seeking inspiration on their sobriety journey, this episode of 'LOL Sober' offers both laughs and life lessons.
