Liz Bentley: From Addiction to Pop Culture Maven
I get so many messages from people being like: wow, I re-examined some stuff. And there it's like such a treatment based world and, like anybody you come into contact with in the rooms, is like: came from treatment, went to treatment. But I'm also not a hundred percent sure and I just really want to help people and go and help people and get educated.
Ever wondered how someone can turn a life of addiction into a thriving career in pop culture? Meet Liz Bentley, the candid host of 'Feathers In My Hair' and 'Out of Work Liz'. In this episode of 'Showing Up with Asher Gottesman', Liz takes us on a journey through her turbulent past and her path to sobriety.
Growing up in an upper-middle-class Jewish family outside Philadelphia, Liz started smoking marijuana at 11 and soon spiraled into drinking and pill addiction, even briefly turning to heroin. Her parents were addicts too, adding another layer to her struggle. But Liz didn't let her story end there. With the help of rehab, yoga, therapy, and EMDR, she’s been sober for six years now.
In a conversation that's as raw as it is enlightening, Liz shares how she used her experiences to fuel her passion for pop culture. She talks about how fandom and reality TV, like MTV's 'Teen Mom', can open up meaningful discussions around mental health and personal growth. And while the topics are serious, there are plenty of laugh-out-loud moments that showcase Liz's unique blend of humor and honesty.
Liz also dives into the challenges and rewards of being a podcaster, from reading reviews to engaging with her audience. Her openness about her journey offers a refreshing perspective on addiction and recovery, making this episode a must-listen for anyone seeking inspiration and real talk about life's ups and downs. So, if you're curious about how pop culture intersects with personal growth or just need a dose of authentic storytelling, tune in to hear Liz Bentley's compelling story.
