Dylan Fredricey on LGBTQIA+ Recovery: Challenges, Triumphs, and Community Support

For me, it was very important that I had peers in the LGBTQIA+ community or I had people that at least understood what I had been through and what the consequences of my addiction looked like, right and could relate to me with me at that level.
Ever wondered what it’s like to navigate recovery as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community? In this episode of AllBetter, host Joe Van Wie sits down with Dylan Fredricey, a family counselor at Brookdale Premier Addiction Recovery, to discuss his personal journey through addiction and recovery. Born in San Diego, Dylan spent his early years struggling with addiction and the complexities of sexual liberation.
His story is one of resilience, hope, and the vital role of community support in overcoming addiction. Dylan’s path to sobriety began in 2011, but it wasn’t smooth sailing. Finding work was tough, so he volunteered at Being Alive San Diego, assisting those affected by HIV/AIDS. This experience sparked his passion for helping others, leading him back to school where he earned two Associate’s Degrees in Social Work and Social and Behavioral Sciences.
Now based in Pennsylvania, Dylan continues to advocate for those in recovery, particularly within the LGBTQIA+ community. Throughout the episode, Dylan sheds light on the unique challenges faced by LGBTQIA+ individuals in addiction and recovery. He discusses the interplay between sexual liberation and addiction, emphasizing the importance of having peers who understand these experiences. Trauma also plays a significant role in addiction, and Dylan shares how it can both fuel and hinder recovery.
The episode also touches on Dylan’s encounters with the criminal justice system and the relapse process as part of recovery. He highlights the crucial role of advocates and allies in helping individuals navigate these challenges. Despite the obstacles, Dylan’s story is one of triumph and resilience. He speaks about overcoming fear, finding support, and his dedication to working in the field of addiction recovery.
Dylan’s work extends beyond counseling; he develops specific trainings for mental health organizations and emphasizes the importance of philanthropy in supporting recovery efforts. This episode offers a heartfelt exploration of the unique experiences faced by LGBTQIA+ individuals in recovery, providing hope and support to those on their own journeys.
