Leah Harris: Transforming Trauma into Advocacy and Healing

I identified with being broken and mentally ill, and so just all of these kinds of deficit-based ways I had been taught to look at myself, and it really wasn't until I'd say my mid -20s, my early 30s, that I really started to kind of look at what happened to me in my life and many, many other people I'd encountered through kind of a social justice lens and a socio-political lens and a trauma-informed lens.
Ever wondered how someone can turn their trauma into a force for good? Meet Leah Harris, a trauma survivor and digital storyteller, who sits down with licensed psychotherapist Jeff Friedman in this episode of the Trauma Informed Podcast. Leah dives into her personal journey, discussing how she once identified as broken and mentally ill. By viewing her experiences through a social justice and trauma-informed lens, she found a path to healing that she now shares with others.
One of the key takeaways from this episode is the power of community. Leah stresses the importance of creating safe spaces where people can feel supported and understood. She also opens up about her role as a parent and her efforts to break the cycle of intergenerational trauma in her own family. Leah challenges the traditional medicalization of mental health, advocating for alternative healing practices that focus on the whole person.
Storytelling and performance are among the tools she uses to help trauma survivors and those struggling with mental health issues. Throughout the conversation, Leah emphasizes the need for a trauma-informed approach to care. She highlights how understanding the impact of trauma can lead to more compassionate and effective support for individuals and communities. Leah also discusses her work with values-driven agencies, showing how these organizations can make a positive difference.
If you're interested in learning about the transformative power of community, alternative healing methods, and the importance of a trauma-informed approach, this episode is a must-listen. Leah Harris is an inspiring advocate whose story offers hope and practical insights for anyone affected by trauma.
