Kutztown Strong: Uniting a Community to Combat Youth Opioid Use
Kutztown strong primarily has three different missions. We'll talk about those in just a little bit. So we look to see what is appropriate for our elementary school students. So we created our own survey and which will go out to our students in the opposite years and we'll be doing that within The Next Month.
Imagine a small town rallying together to fight a growing crisis. In 2014, the residents of Kutztown Borough did just that. Under the guidance of Andrew Brett, a dedicated school counselor, and with the support of local business owners, law enforcement, school officials, students, and nonprofits, Kutztown Strong was born. This episode of 'Your Bridge To Addiction Resources' delves into how this community task force has been making waves in preventing opioid use among young people.
Andrew Brett shares the origins and evolution of Kutztown Strong, a group that took swift action to address the opioid problem affecting their youth. They didn’t just talk about change; they implemented evidence-based programs for students from kindergarten through 12th grade. The group even created their own annual student survey to track the effectiveness of their initiatives and gather feedback directly from the kids they aim to help. The heart of Kutztown Strong lies in its community-driven approach.
By involving students in decision-making and organizing engaging activities like capture the flag nights, they’ve fostered a supportive environment that encourages positive choices. Andrew discusses the importance of peer-to-peer influence and how these connections have been pivotal in their success. Leading a nonprofit isn't without its challenges, and Andrew opens up about the hurdles he’s faced in his leadership role.
But with monthly public meetings and an open invitation for community involvement, Kutztown Strong remains a beacon of hope and action. This episode offers a deep dive into the power of community collaboration in tackling youth opioid use. Tune in to hear Andrew Brett’s inspiring story and learn how you can support or replicate such efforts in your own community.
