Kelly Osbourne's Candid Chat on Addiction, Relapse, and Redemption
For me, it was an interesting process and when I started drinking- granted I was much older- I had really, you know, people like you didn't really drink until you were. I let myself shame, spiral for a little bit, because I think that, as an addict, you have to do that so that you can remember the pain, because the pain is the remembering of what that felt like is also something that keeps me sober, because I don't want to feel like that at all.
Ever wondered what it's like to grow up in the spotlight and struggle with addiction? Kelly Osbourne knows firsthand. As a kid, she was part of 'The Osbournes', one of the first reality TV shows that gave the world an unfiltered look into her family's life. But the constant attention came with a heavy price. By age 13, Kelly turned to alcohol, and things only got worse from there.
Feeling detached and isolated, she found herself drinking and using drugs alone, often as a way to cope with her father’s Parkinson’s disease and other family dramas. In this eye-opening episode of 'Knockin' Doorz Down', Kelly sits down with host Jason LaChance to share her raw and honest journey from addiction to sobriety. She opens up about her recent relapse, triggered by defamation and negative comments towards a loved one, and how the pandemic added fuel to the fire.
Kelly’s story is not just about struggle but also about hope and redemption. She talks about the therapies and support systems that have helped her stay sober and the importance of managing expectations. “You cannot have expectations of people because you can't control them”, she says, highlighting a key lesson from her recovery. Kelly also emphasizes the power of remembering the pain of addiction as a tool to stay sober.
“I don't want to feel like that at all”, she admits, sharing how this memory keeps her on track. Beyond her personal battles, Kelly has become an advocate for mental health and addiction issues. She’s worked with organizations like GLITZ to provide housing for transgender sex workers and has been involved in various advocacy efforts.
This episode is a must-listen for anyone struggling with addiction or mental health issues, or for those who want to understand the complexities of living in the public eye while battling personal demons. Kelly’s journey is a testament to the power of resilience and the importance of support in overcoming life’s toughest challenges.
