Keith Smith: Overcoming Adversity and Embracing Identity
For me, recovery allows me to process these feelings that I've never processed before, and instead of using the bottle and not process them because of the bottle, I have to be present and process them, and it's going to hurt me, it's going to maybe hurt the other people, but for me it's a lesson and I can use this lesson to continue my living.
Keith Smith's story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Growing up in the Bahamas with religious parents, Keith faced numerous challenges, including struggling with his sexuality and enduring sexual abuse from a cousin between the ages of 8 and 12. These early experiences led him down a path of using alcohol to numb his pain.
However, a life-changing anxiety attack in a grocery store became the catalyst for Keith to seek help and embark on a journey of self-discovery and healing. In this episode of 'The Courage to Change: A Recovery Podcast', Keith opens up about his transformative journey to sobriety and self-acceptance. He discusses how he found solace and strength in the recovery community, particularly through Lionrock Recovery, where he now serves as a CommUnity Facilitator.
Keith also shares his role as the host of an LGBTQIA+ support group, emphasizing the importance of creating safe spaces for individuals to share their stories and find support. Through candid conversations, Keith reveals how sobriety has allowed him to process his emotions healthily and continuously grow. His story is one of overcoming adversity, embracing identity, and the profound impact of community support.
