Karen Casey: From Addiction to Bestselling Author

I really think that I got sober as much on the fellowship of alcoholics anonymous as anything else, because initially, you know, I mean we did so many things together.
Imagine rediscovering your passion in the midst of battling addiction. That’s exactly what happened to Karen Casey, Ph.D., a prolific author whose journey is nothing short of inspiring. In this episode of Steppin' Out Radio, Karen opens up about her struggle with addiction and how she found solace and purpose through writing. Growing up, Karen always had a love for writing, but it took a backseat as she navigated the turbulent waters of addiction.
Her turning point came while pursuing her Ph.D. at the University of Minnesota, where she found both her sobriety and her writing spark through twelve-step support groups. Karen’s battle with addiction began in college, where alcohol became her go-to for calming her nerves. Despite being a straight-A student, her drinking habits spiraled out of control. It was after a failed relationship that Karen discovered Al-Anon, and the fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous played a pivotal role in her recovery.
She learned to build meaningful friendships and find support within her community. Her first book, 'Each Day a New Beginning: Daily Meditations for Women,' has sold over 3 million copies, providing hope and healing to countless women in recovery. Karen's subsequent works, including 'One Day at a Time in Al-Anon' and her memoir 'My Story to Yours,' continue to inspire readers globally.
Her latest book, 'And Counting,' is a collection of essays encouraging readers to find meaning and purpose in their lives. Karen's story is a testament to the power of community support and the healing potential of creative expression. Her books offer messages of hope and resilience, making a significant impact on readers facing their own struggles. Tune in to hear Karen's full story on Steppin' Out Radio and discover how she turned her life around through the power of writing.
